Mindy came to us on Feb. 27th, a horrible case of neglect. Her previous family had turned her in to the county shelter to be put to sleep stating they didn't want to take her to the vet. She was examined by our county vet who put in her notes, "This dog has been neglected for a VERY very long time, rescue needed today or put to sleep immediately.” She was horribly matted, full of dirt, thorns, and twigs, she dragged her back leg when she walked (would not use it at all), had a tennis ball sized hernia on her stomach, but the worst part was her jaw – it was so infected that you could smell the stench from across the room. When the matting was removed we found sores, scabs, and scars-the result of YEARS of flea and tick infestations. The next day Mindy went to the vet. During surgery her leg was evaluated--an old break that was never fixed, her tennis ball sized hernia was repaired, and 1/2 of her bottom jaw was removed due to the infection. Despite everything, the next morning Mindy was wagging her tail! Mindy spent a month in foster care recovering. During that time she took regular trips to Petsmart where she finally found a family that decided she was just too special to pass up. She has adjusted nicely and they wonder how they ever lived without her. Mindy will be enrolled in Canine Good Citizen classes soon, well on her way to becoming a pet therapy dog--in hopes of working with abused/neglected kids. Mindy has a purpose for being here, and we believe that's it.
