Born on the Fourth of July

Born on the Fourth of JulyFinding the 'right' cat is often hard, but our decision to adopt Ozzy was made very easy when my "tough guy" brother held an orange stripy fuzz ball and announced, "I'm already attached to this one!" Wonderful as Ozzy was, everything was not alright with him. He had come to us covered in fleas and had always seemed very tired and weak. He never played for more than five minutes and after two weeks with us, had only gained a few ounces. We took him to the vet more times than I can count, Ozzy suffering through traumatic car rides, the drawing of blood and medicine that never helped.

We had been told to brace ourselves, that we would likely be losing our little fire cracker. There were only two tests left: Feline Leukemia and Feline Aids. For a kitten who weighed less than two pounds, the odds were against him. It seemed Ozzy, was not meant to stay with us.

But life takes odd turns sometimes. Test after test came back negative until, at last, the cause was found: An intestinal bacterial infection. A few weeks of antibiotics and Ozzy was gaining weight, playing us to exhaustion, demanding love and behaving as a healthy cat should.

In a celebration, we pulled his paperwork so we could be sure to mark his birthday the next year. After months of worry it was an event worth a celebration. Imagine our surprise when Ozzy's records showed that he really is our fire cracker: Ozzy was born on the Fourth of July. We are so grateful that this miracle kitten came to us.
