While my story has a sad ending, it does describe what a positive impact an adopted pet can have on your life. My stepson insisted on a Husky and wanted one from the local pet shop. I had other ideas. While he was with relatives, I went down to the SPCA and looked at the Huskies available. They had a 2 year old red and white female. She was rescued from a mobile home where she'd been chained and starved. She only weighed 28 lbs when they found her and she spent a couple of months in foster care to regain her strength. I agreed to walk her and see what she was like. The lady who brought her out for me said her name was Autumn - a beautiful name for a beautiful dog. Autumn spent two years teaching us why Huskies are called fur-kids. She ruined two doors, a hallway rug and a baby gate. She also brought us more love than we'd ever imagined possible. Unfortunately, just this past June we discovered a tumor on her ear which was diagnosed as cancer. We received the results, which showed she had Fibrocystic Sarcoma, a cancer with a very low survival rate. Autumn crossed the Rainbow Bridge in July of 2007. Though it was only two short years that she was a part of lives, I would not change one thing. We are stronger, more humble and have a better appreciation for what time we have with each other now. We have since adopted another homeless dog, Angel-Beth, but Authumn shall never be far from our hearts.
