Pet HeroesMargarita is a rescue dog. She is approximately 4 years old, mixed-breed, and we have had her since November 2005.

My story about Margarita is very special. I was dog-sitting her for a week and we were on one of our long walks. We were on a favorite trail that runs along a bay. The tide was very low and the bay is very muddy. There were two female Mallard ducks out on the mud flats. Margarita took off running towards them, one of the ducks flew away and she chased it, but then stopped because of the deep mud. The other duck did not move, and seemed sick. The duck that flew away flew back to Margarita to get her to chase her again. I called Margarita back to me and she obeyed very nicely. Since I volunteer for the Bainbridge Island Wildlife Association, I was thinking that I would have to go back to my house to get my car and then walk in that deep mud and rescue the duck. I wasn’t too happy about the task! Then, I noticed that Margarita was gone. I called her and she came up the bank with the duck in her mouth that I had thought I would have to rescue. She came right up to me and gave me the duck. Margarita had kept her mouth very soft as to not hurt the duck. I took the duck and noticed that a large cockle shell clam had clamped onto the tip of the duck’s web foot. I said to myself, “So, that’s what was holding the duck down”! I carried the duck to a house near by and they helped me remove the clam. I walked the duck, with Margarita, to the edge of the bank and the duck happily flew away.
