For forty days I shared my home with Brooks, a neglected golden retriever, who had been locked away in a garage before he moved in with me. This big, gentle dog was a hero during his time here by helping calm a badly abused and aggressive foster dog. He was eventually adopted by a disabled woman for whom he fills the void in her life. He continues to serve with distinction!
But, here's why I consider him to be a true hero. One cold winter night Brooks went out on his nightly walk and we spent time working on heeling and pulling on the leash. Half way through the walk Brooks took off and insisted we go in a different direction. Lo and behold, Brooks and I arrived at a snow bank where a yellow lab appeared to be injured. While assessing the lab, we realized the dog couldn’t stand up or walk. Meanwhile, a neighbor recognized the lab and went to get the lab’s owner. The owner rushed to her dog’s side, explaining that the lab is old and doesn’t have much more time on earth. The lab was taken inside where she could warm up and rest comfortably. I don’t know how long the poor dog was lying in the snow, but I have no doubt that if Brooks hadn’t picked up his scent and found the dog, things would have ended tragically. Thankfully, Brooks has an amazing nose and knew when he was needed. Brooks saved the day, and more importantly, another dog!
