Joon, Pet Hero
<<BACK

Joon, Pet HeroI adopted Joon, a Shepard mix from the Minnesota Valley Humane Society in 1993. I also foster for them and once fostered two dogs that were rescued from a farm with 300 dogs, Kayla and Albert.

After Kayla and Albert had been with me and Joon for over a month, they went up for adoption. Albert, a black and tan mix, was adopted by a family in a country town. Unfortunately, when they brought him home he jumped from the car with his leash still on. Since he didn't know them, he dashed away. I was notified the next day and took Joon with me to look for Albert. We went through a park and I could see some marks in the snow from his dragging leash, but it was old snow and too hard to follow. I went looking for him each day even though the town was 30 minutes away.

Several days after he disappeared, 2 inches of new snow fell. Joon and I headed out as soon as it was light. We went to the park and found fresh leash marks. I could see that Joon was following the trail in the park, so when she crossed a road I trusted her lead. We went down a farm road a mile or two. I could see his trail most of the time. We went up a driveway and then back to the road, towards a cow farm and into a field. We followed the tracks through deeper snow, his footprints getting farther apart. After about an hour of walking, Joon suddenly turned around and was tackled by Albert. He had been running towards my voice. He greeted Joon, ran up to me, and we rolled in the snow.

After feeding Albert lunch and bathing him, I returned him to his new family.

For several years I received Christmas cards from "Jake" and his new family.

Sadly I lost Joon last October. I will always remember how Joon saved Albert’s life; She will always be a hero in my eyes.
