PetSmart Charities® offers funding toward the procurement of equipment and consumables for start up or expansion of high volume spay/neuter clinics.
Having a high volume spay/neuter clinic means that you can perform enough surgeries in your community to make an impact. For communities of over 250,000 people this is considered to be a minimum of 5,000 surgeries annually. For communities fewer than 250,000 people, PetSmart Charities staff will work with you to determine a number that is achievable and shows an impact in your community.
For expansion clinics, we are looking for you to expand by 5,000 surgeries within 1-2 years of funding for communities over 250,000 people. For communities under 250,000 people, PetSmart Charities staff will work with you to determine a suitable increase. High volume is referring to increasing public surgeries that would not otherwise be done. At least 75% of the surgeries must be for public animals, which includes free-roaming (ferals) as well as owned animals. You can sterilize your own organization’s animals or other rescues/shelters in your clinic but the clinic should not be solely used for these surgeries.
Medical and office equipment necessary to open a high volume clinic as well as consumables (such as suture, gloves, glue, etc). For a full list of potential equipment we recommend you start by reviewing the Humane Alliance site.
- Single items or a few equipment pieces to replace/update existing equipment to maintain your current level of surgeries. You must increase the number of surgeries you are currently doing by the levels above in order to qualify.
- We will not currently fund outfitting of surgery suites solely for in house shelter or foster animals. Public surgeries must be included in your clinic plans.
- Salaries, build out, or bricks and mortar expenses.
- Complete applicable pre-application questionnaire in the "Are You Ready?" section below to determine if this is the right grant for you and the right time. Upon completion of the survey you will also be expected to talk with PetSmart Charities staff about your clinic plans.
- You must submit a business plan and 12-month budget showcasing how you will sustain the program. View the budgeting form template on our Resource for Agencies page.
- Prepare and execute a plan to raise approximately $35,000 or 3 months of operating expenses as reserves prior or close to the opening of your clinic.
- The goal is to build a program that is sustainable long term beyond our grant funds so a key element of your application must include a plan to make this clinic self-sustaining when the grant funding is gone.
- One element of your grant will include providing data for a minimum of 36 months, which will allow us to measure the results of your program. In most cases, this will mean sharing your surgical data including surgeries broken down by species, sex, zip code, age/weight, and possibly other categories.
- We encourage you to listen to the Starting a Spay/Neuter Clinic webinar before applying.
- There is no deadline for applying for spay/neuter clinic equipment grants. Applications are accepted year round.
- We prefer you apply when you are about six months or less from opening.
- Upon completion of the pre-application questionnaire, you will work with PetSmart Charities staff to determine when it is best for you to apply. We prefer you to apply when you are about six months or less from opening. You must have secured your building by lease or purchase and submit a signed copy of your lease or deed with your application. Your renovations should be close to being finished, reserve funds raised and the equipment should be one of the last pieces.
- If you are following a specific model, such as Humane Alliance, you should have already applied for and been accepted into their mentorship program and be ready to schedule your training with them.
- PetSmart Charities reserves the right to approve grants as deemed appropriate by the PetSmart Charities Board of Directors. Grant decisions are final. Any decision inquiries should be sent, in writing, to the PetSmart Charities Grant Committee at the above address.
- No decision information is available by phone.
