Grant Application Guide

Fast Track Grant Applications:
Fast Track grants must be submitted according to the deadline for your state. You can save the template version of an application as a document on your computer. Then you can simply type into the gray spaces provided on the forms.

Preliminary Applications:

For non-Fast Track grants or agencies with income above $500,000, the first step is to fill out a preliminary proposal:

Preliminary proposals must be submitted according to the deadline for your state. Please avoid targeting the program areas we do not typically fund, which are listed at the bottom of this page. After submission, you will receive a letter of regret or be invited to submit a full proposal. We will e-mail the appropriate full-proposal application to you at that time. Funding is not guaranteed. Typically, first-time grants are for $10,000 or less, and not more than 15% of your organization's last year's annual income.

Note: Those with total revenue of $500,000 ($500,000 Canada) or more in the last year must submit an independently audited financial statement and IRS Form 990 (Canada, proof of registry as a charity) with the full proposal.

Areas PetSmart Charities Does Not Typically Fund:

  • PetSmart Charities generally will not award grants specifically for building projects, endowment campaigns or general operating budgets.
  • PetSmart Charities does not target grants to individuals; our grants target not-for-profit organizations.
  • Typically PetSmart Charities does not fund sanctuaries focused on permanent care of animals. Instead, we focus funding on shelters, animal control agencies and foster groups.
  • Grants will not be awarded for programs in support of wildlife or endangered species.
  • Grants are confined to helping animals in the U.S. and its territories and Canada.
  • For human/animal bond requests, it is expected that outside sources beyond PetSmart Charities will be significantly contributing funding, as these types of proposals can also seek United Way and other funds.
  • For medical treatment of animals to promote adoption, it is best to have multiple sources contributing, as PetSmart Charities can only fund a reasonable amount per animal.
  • Personnel costs are rarely covered, with some exceptions for behavior specialists to conduct training.
  • PetSmart Charities typically does not award more than one grant to the same organization in any 12-month period.
  • PetSmart Charities typically does not fund the same grant proposal for more than one year.
  • As of April 1, 2005, PetSmart Charities does not fund vehicles except by our invitation.

If you have questions about the appropriateness of your request, contact Patty Finch at 1-800-738-1385, ext. 2832. For funds to help with large-scale disasters (e.g., natural disasters), animal victims of violence or single rescues involving 50 or more animals (e.g., hoarder rescue), you can apply for Emergency Relief by calling Barbara Fought at 1-800-738-1385, ext. 2840.
