Emergency Relief in Action

From time to time we have the opportunity to obtain follow-up stories about the pets our emergency relief program has assisted. The following are some of these heartwarming stories.

Additionally, stay on top of our emergency relief-funding assistance and Emergency Relief Waggin'® vehicle deployments to assist pets in natural and man-made disasters with the below emergency relief news alerts.

Emergency Relief Stories

  • Lily
Lily - Lily’s life began in February 2009 in a filthy, cold, cramped cage in an alleged puppy mill in Dudley, N.C. She was born to a heavily matted and malnourished female Maltese breeder dog, and was the only surviving puppy.
  • Sparkle
Sparkle - In January 2009 Christine was called to help out at a rescue in Montague, Texas, involving more than 500 dogs in desperate need of attention. That’s where Christine first laid eyes on a flea-infested, mangy golden retriever/poodle mix who was excruciatingly thin and curled up in a filthy pen.
  • Lily2
Lily - Across the room, a little red Dachshund sat in a crate with a very large note on her cage that read “scarred lungs”. Laura Fletcher, who volunteers for the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) in Tampa Bay, was at the shelter that day to help out with all of the animals rescued from an alleged Tennessee puppy mill in June, 2009.
  • Scruffy Boy
Scruffy Boy - One almost bald, scruffy-looking, small, mixed-breed male dog arrived at the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals/Tampa Bay (SPCA) shelter in late September 2008. He was one of the countless pet victims of Hurricane Ike.
