WECHS Receives $20,000 Grant from PetSmart Charities of Canada to Spay/Neuter Feral Cats

Windsor (June 29, 2012) —

The Windsor/Essex County Humane Society received this week a $20,000 grant from PetSmart Charities of Canada® to implement a large scale trap-neuter-return (TNR) program for feral cats in two targeted areas.  The grant will allow us to sterilize the majority of free-roaming cats in the targeted areas, with a goal of achieving zero population growth at the sites.  The first area is a residential area of west Windsor bordered by Peter Street, South Street, Bloomfield Road, and Prince Road.  The second site is Viscount Estates in the Town of Essex.  This grant will allow us to alter more than 250 cats at no charge to their caregiver.

This initiative is a component of our goal to end the needless euthanasia of animals in our community.  Despite our new public veterinary clinic and the City of Windsor’s recent voucher program, there continue to be too many animals in our community giving birth to unwanted litters.  Feral caregivers are often well meaning, but frequently lack the resources to alter the cats they are feeding.  It is hoped that the success of this program will lead to other targeted TNR programs in Windsor and Essex County.

PetSmart Charities of Canada is a registered charity that creates and supports programs that save the lives of homeless pets, raise awareness of companion animal welfare issues, and promote healthy relationships between people and pets.  Since 1999, PCCI has granted more than $2.1 million to animal welfare agencies, and through its in-store adoption program, has helped save the lives of more than 100,000 pets.  The Windsor/Essex County Humane Society previously received a $35,000 grant from PetSmart Charities of Canada to purchase equipment for our veterinary clinic focused on spay/neuter.

Please note that Kit Jenkins, Program Manager for PetSmart Charities of Canada will be at the Humane Society this afternoon and available for interviews.
