PetSmart Charities Celebrates Three Million Lives Saved

On Saturday, June 23, PetSmart Charities introduced the 3 millionth pet adopted from PetSmart Charities Adoption Centers.  Winchester, a two-year-old Border Collie mix, received a new lease on life when the Aukamp family of Highlands Ranch, Colorado, took him to his new forever home. continued success of the 13-year-old

program.

Winchester received a lifetime supply of food, training, grooming and PetsHotel or Doggie Day Camp stays from PetSmart, as well as an Optimum Wellness plan for one year from Banfield, the Pet Hospital.

Thanks to the hard work and dedication of our 3,400 adoption agency partners, 37,000 PetSmart associates, and millions of PetSmart customers, we have made a significant dent on pet overpopulation and euthanasia.  Although nearly three to four million pets are still euthanized each year, that number has continued to drop since the late 1980’s when the animal welfare field estimated that as many as 17 million were euthanized annually.

Charities is getting a leg up on pet overpopulation.  Like Winchester, one lucky pet is adopted every two minutes from one of the 928 PetSmart Charities Adoption Centers in North America.  PetSmart Charities will continue to celebrate each adoption and work toward a day when our vision of a lifelong, loving home for every pet is finally achieved.

Adoptions Program
PetSmart Charities works with more than 3,400 animal welfare agencies to help the agencies find lifelong, loving homes for their pets through adoptions.  PetSmart Charities’ adoption partners receive many benefits:

• Animal welfare agencies receive free adoption space inside their local PetSmart Charities Adoption Center located inside each PetSmart store.   Adoption partners can bring available pets up to seven days a week to facilitate adoptions.

• PetSmart Charities provides up to $15 in adoption rewards funding to adoption partners for every pet adopted through the adoption center.

• Adoption partners also participate in our twice-annual National Pet Adoption Weekend events held in the spring and fall.  During these events, the agencies receive $15 in adoption rewards funding for each animal they adopt out and the benefit of free marketing and promotion from PetSmart Charities and PetSmart.

• Adoption partners receive additional funding from the PetSmart Charities’ annual Wish Tree and Santa Claws campaigns.  These funds are raised in store through PetSmart customer donations and are allocated equally amongst each store’s adoption partners at the end of the campaign.

By providing space to adoption partners in the PetSmart Charities Adoption Center, homeless pets are given another location and additional opportunity for exposure to the pet-loving public, and the extra time they need to find lifelong, loving homes. Over the past 13 years, our Adoption Centers have completed more than 3.2 million adoptions.  At our current rate, that’s one life saved every minute.
