Brownie

Brownie

When Brownie left the Salina Animal Shelter in Salina, Kansas aboard PetSmart Charities® Rescue Waggin’® vehicle, he was on the road to a new and improved life.

He arrived at the Humane Society of Boulder Valley in Boulder, Colorado, and not only found a new family, but he also got the chance to walk on all four paws for the very first time.

Even though Brownie, a 3-year-old pointer mix, was missing a back left paw, veterinarians at the Humane Society of Boulder Valley were impressed with his high level of activity. But they also knew that Brownie needed help to keep moving and playing as he aged.

The Humane Society proceeded to share Brownie’s story with OrthoPets, a full-service prosthetic clinic for pets. They agreed to provide a free prosthetic paw, fitting, and three months of follow-up care and consultation for his new family.

“While many dogs may get by, I have seen the consequences of life on three legs,” says Patrice Mich, DVM, founder and medical director for OrthoPets. “Dogs missing limbs often develop chronic back and hip pain and premature end of life issues.”

Just two days after being adopted, Brownie was fitted for his new prosthetic paw. He is adjusting well, and his new family is eager to take him on his first hike.

Brownie now has a long, healthy road ahead of him!
