New Research Findings!

We’re sharing the findings of new research into motivators and barriers for adopting and spaying/neutering pets.

Background

PetSmart Charities® is the leading funder of animal welfare organizations in North Amercia, and strives to continue being a leader in raising awareness about the importance of adopting and spaying/neutering pets to help end homeless-pet overpopulation and reduce the number of pets who are euthanized each year.

In order to understand and quantify current awareness and perceptions on these two issues, as well as to understand current barriers to using adoption and spay/neuter programs, PetSmart Charities conducted a consumer research study.

Specific objectives of this research were:

  • Measure awareness of pet adoption and spay/neuter problems in the U.S.
  • Gauge whether perceptions of and attitudes toward pet adoption and spaying/neutering differ by geographic region in the U.S.
  • Identify the drivers for using pet adoption and spay/neuter services.
  • Determine the barriers to pet adoption and spay/neuter services.

The results from this study are being used now to help create messages that raise awareness for adoption and spay/neuter programs and motivate more people to consider using these services in the future. PetSmart Charities encourages other animal-welfare advocates to review and utilize the findings of this important research so, together, we can save the lives of more homeless pets.
