Model Volunteering Program: Pet Photography Volunteer Team at SPCA of Monterey County in Monterey, Calif.
The Challenge
Taking photos of shelter pets is a challenge, indeed. And so is finding capable photographers with top-notch equipment who not only care about pets, but also know how to handle them safely and humanely – and, who have the time and patience to capture the best and most inviting photos of pets who need homes. Plus, flattering photos are a must as a growing number of prospective adopters now search the internet for the pets they’re interested in taking home. Sadly, many would-be pet parents are discouraged if a dog, cat or other pet looks frightened, dirty or aggressive; on the flip side, a picture is worth 1,000 words. By capturing images of pets who look happy, comfortable, clean and friendly, we can greatly improve their chances of attracting adopters and finding the lifelong, loving homes they deserve.
The Solution
The SPCA of Monterey County created a Pet Photography Volunteer Team that:
- Proactively reviews adoptable pets on the website and determines which pets don’t have a photo or need a new-and-improved photo;
- Quickly takes, selects and returns the best and most flattering photos, along with the pets’ names and identification numbers, to the shelter staff via e-mail so they can be uploaded right away;
- Takes the pictures before the shelter opens to the public so as not to disrupt shelter operations or adoption efforts;
- Uses their own photo equipment, so the shelter doesn’t have to invest limited resources on buying digital cameras and other gear;
- Is already trained in safe and humane animal handling by the Volunteer Department so team members don’t rely on the busy staff for help.
The Results?
- Better photos, which lead to more adoptions! And, with correct pet names and ID numbers attached, the staff doesn’t have to do “detective work” to figure out who’s in which picture.
- Little if any reliance on the staff, allowing them to tend to other shelter tasks and issues.
- Efficient and safe photo sessions; no disruption to the day-to-day business; and cost savings realized by not having to hire professional photographers or purchase expensive camera gear.
“This program requires very little staff time – only uploading the photos into our shelter software,” said Beth Brookhouser with the SPCA of Monterey County. “More importantly, the quality of photographs produced adds to our perception in the community as a professional organization that has great pets for adoption and cares for their comfort and well-being during their time with us.”

See for yourself what a difference this program makes by checking out other ‘before-and-after’ shots of shelter pets at http://www.spcamc.org/ppv.htm.
“While the ‘before’ shots are usable photos,” Brookhouser said, “we think you’ll agree that the ‘after’ shots reveal the pets’ personalities and are significantly more compelling to potential adopters.”
