Founded by PetSmart to Save Lives

20 years later, no other charity saves as many pets’ lives as we do

PetSmart employees celebrate pet adoptionJim and Janice Dougherty, the founders of PetSmart®, wanted to help solve the problem of pet homelessness. In the early 1990s, they made the radical decision to never sell dogs and cats in their stores. Instead, they created PetSmart Charities® as a nonprofit animal welfare organization — separate from PetSmart, Inc.

People often think that PetSmart Charities is largely funded by the corporation. But in reality, our main source of funding comes from caring pet parents who donate a dollar or more when they check out at PetSmart. If you’re one of our donors, thank you for helping us save the lives of more than 6 million pets and counting.

PetSmart’s largest contribution to our nonprofit comes in the form of the retail space they donate in every store for PetSmart Charities Adoption Centers. And for every pet adopted, PetSmart Charities invests in the local community to help pets in need. Because of this unique relationship, no other charity saves as many pets’ lives as we do.
