Volunteering at PetSmart Charities Adoption Center Turns Out Purrrrfectly

A kitten named Lucy came in to the PetSmart Charities Adoption Center where I volunteered, and I watched her grow

Cat by fireplaceI’ve volunteered for Operation Cat Care Rescue at my local PetSmart Charities Adoption Center for nearly 2 years. All that time, I wanted to adopt a cat. But, I already had an 18-year-old cat named Mickey, who has never had to share.

One day, a kitten named Lucy came in to the PetSmart Charities Adoption Center where I volunteered, and I watched her grow. She was the kind of kitten I would have adopted – she fit my life and had been there the longest. According to her veterinary records, she had been in the care of three other shelters before coming to Operation Cat Care Rescue’s PetSmart Charities Adoption Center.

One day, the Adoption Center supervisor asked me if I would like to have Lucy. I never thought we would give Lucy her forever home, but I believe God answered a prayer. We brought her home to see whether our older cat would take to her.

It turned out that as long as they’re in separate rooms, all is right with the world. As an older cat, Mickey understandably needs more sleep. Lucy has brought energy to our home, and as a big cat of 14 pounds, she can jump and play like cats half her size.

A “tuxedo” cat, Lucy is very smart. She likes to catch flies and moths, and she warns me if there’s a spider. I taught her how to play catch with an old Nerf ball, and she loves to play with drinking straws. Give her a straw and she will entertain herself for days, chewing it to pieces and batting it around.

She purrs very loudly; I can hear her in the next room. We know she loves us because she brings her toys into our bedroom during the night and sometimes plays with them. She’ll then get up on our bed and walk around with her loud purring before she just plops down and goes to sleep.
