You’ve Got to Have Dogs

Doug and Joni Lehman have chosen to share their love of dogs by supporting organizations like PetSmart Charities®. The Lehmans give to PetSmart Charities because they appreciate our high efficiency and charitable ratings. They also know PetSmart Charities has the size and reach to do a great deal of good in the world.

Dog leaning on ownerDoug and Joni Lehman’s almost-20-year marriage has always included dogs. They each brought a dog into the marriage, and even though their retirement plans aren’t set in stone, they know they will always have a house full of dogs.

“We don’t have children. Our dogs are very much our children,” Doug says. “Frankly, I don’t think either one of us can imagine life without dogs. You’ve got to have dogs.”

The Lehmans, who live in Fort Wayne, Ind., currently have 2 canine family members — Scruffy, a 9-year-old Jack Russell/Yorkshire terrier mix, and Zinger, a 12-year-old Brittany spaniel. They’ve chosen to share their love of dogs by supporting organizations like PetSmart Charities®.

“We just strongly believe in supporting animal welfare organizations, and we take great pains to do so,” Doug says. “It’s something that’s very important to us.”

High marks for PetSmart Charities

The Lehmans started giving to PetSmart® — the only pet store at which they shop — by tacking on a donation each time they bought supplies. Eventually they started sending checks, and recently they chose to include PetSmart Charities in their estate plans.

They did not make the decision to give to PetSmart Charities lightly. The Lehmans are very active in charitable giving.

“I believe PetSmart Charities is a very efficient charity,” Doug says. “A very good percentage of the support does go into programs as opposed to fundraising and administration. I’m very pleased with what I’ve seen.”

Doug also appreciates that PetSmart Charities receives a Charity Navigator 4-star rating and has the size and scale to do a great deal of good in the world. The Lehmans chose to dedicate a percentage of their estate to PetSmart Charities.

“We encourage everyone who is interested in animal welfare to do the same in their estate planning,” Doug says.

I would love to help with animals.

I am looking for a boy kitten 3 weeks and not fixed

Hi Brianna, I'm glad to hear you want to adopt a pet! In order to prevent more unwanted litters, it's against PetSmart Charities' policy to allow pets to be adopted who haven't been spayed or neutered. Learn more about why we have this policy.

I am looking for a terrier cross that is available for adoption. I live in the country , namely Ward Two in Port Hope Ontario.
I want a dog that is both feisty and loving of his master. My experience with terriers is extensive. Columbo was my last one
and he had to be euthanized 3 years ago. Quite frankly it broke my heart. But I'm ready now to take on a new project.
I don't think that there is anything more rewarding than the bond that develops between a dog and his master.

Hi Peter, I'm happy to hear you want to adopt a pet! You can search for adoptable pets, PetSmart Charities adoption centers and events through our website.

Malini Byanna

Mother and Son are looking for a miniature yorkshire terrier/poodle/labradoodle to adopt that is spayed/neutered and potty-trained. :-)

That's so exciting, Malini! All pets adopted through PetSmart Charities' adoption program are already spayed or neutered. You can search for adoptable pets, PetSmart Charities adoption centers and events through our website.

I think I'm going to need some help. We have 3 dogs. My dog, Rajah, has been with me for 15 yrs and saved my life twice. My daughter's dog, Maizey, is a little Pekinese who just wants to be loved and love you.....and she knows she's My dog has been great with my grandson, but she is getting to that age where she just wants to lay by me and sleep. So she doesn't want to be pulled around and played with much anymore. That's why we got my grandson his own dog/playmate, Rocky, a hound/boxer mix that a friend had and my grandson and him bonded at the dog-park. Rocky lets my grandson pull him around and they play tug of war and have a great time. All three of the dogs are itching themselves like crazy. My dog has given herself an open sore on her hip from biting and scratching. A friend mentioned it sounds like Mange so I'm going to have to take them to a vet and get medicine for them.....I'm on a fixed income and my daughter hasn't gotten to full-time yet at her job. We were homeless in MN so I'm glad we moved to Easley, SC to be close to my sister and it's warmer here. We are doing much better here, but it takes time to get on our feet. I'm afraid of how much it is going to cost when I go to PetSmart or somewhere tomorrow. Any suggestions?
Thank You,
Dixie Schlaak

Hi Dixie, I'm sorry to hear about your pups. Have you tried reaching out to your local animal welfare organizations? They'll have the best knowledge of the resources available in your area, including low-cost veterinary care.
