Questions and Answers

We’re here to help homeless pets—and the people who love them. Find answers to your most pressing questions here:

How do I adopt a pet?

We’re so excited you’re choosing to adopt love!

If you’re new to pet adoption, start by answering a few questions to find out if you’re ready to bring home a new pet. After you’ve given some thought to these questions, you can chat with one of our adoption partners at a PetSmart Charities Adoption Center or at one of our many nationwide adoption events. They can provide more information on adoptable pets and help identify a pet that’s right for you.

What should I expect from the adoption process?

Each adoption center or event takes on a specific approach and the process will be slightly different depending on where you go. But there are some common things you can expect:

  • Once you’ve chosen the pet who seems right for your family, you’ll meet with a representative from the local adoption group who can answer any questions and make sure that the pet is a good match for your home.
  • Next, you’ll fill out an application and pay a reasonable adoption fee (set by the adoption partner). It may take 30 minutes to 2 hours to complete the adoption process but we promise it’s all worth it!
  • In most cases, you’ll bring your pet home the same day. But there are some adoption partners that require a background check and/or home visit to ensure the pet’s long-term safety.
