Reducing Unplanned Litters Day by Day

Fighting pet overpopulation at the community level

Dog prepares for spay/neuter surgeryThere are more than 6 million success stories about pets adopted with the help of PetSmart Charities®. That’s 1 out of 10 adoptions in North America. But, the pet overpopulation problem continues. An estimated 7 million pets are looking for homes right now.

Spaying or neutering cats and dogs is the surest way to prevent unplanned litters. That’s why PetSmart Charities offers so many programs that make access to spay/neuter services easier and more affordable.

National programs working at the local level

We offer national programs for pet parents, animal welfare groups and nonprofit spay/neuter clinics in the U.S. and Canada.

  • Targeted community grants provide support for low-cost, spay/neuter services in a community, focused on a:
    • Geographic location
    • Demographic
    • Specific species or breed.
  • Free-roaming cat grants provide funding, strategic planning and mentoring for a comprehensive Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR) program for free-roaming cats.
  • Spay/neuter blitz grants fund programs aimed at quickly spaying or neutering a large number of pets:
    • “Beat the Heat” — spay female cats in February before they go into heat.
    • “Precious, Not Parents” — inform communities about spay/neuter services for puppies and kittens.
    • “Primp Your Pit” — spay/neuter pit-bull–type dogs.
    • "Happy Neuter Year" — neuter male dogs and cats in January.

Supporting animal welfare groups

We also provide grants for local animal welfare groups to run spay/neuter programs. Many focus on reducing feral cat populations. Other grants provide subsidies to lower the cost of surgery for pets who have homes or pets who have been adopted recently. Some groups may use grants to cover the cost of transportation to and from the clinic to meet the specific needs of their communities.

Working smart to prevent more unplanned litters

Pet overpopulation cannot be solved by adoption alone. PetSmart Charities has subsidized more than 1.4 million spay/neuter surgeries since 2009.

By spaying or neutering even more cats and dogs, we’ll reduce pet homelessness.
