Saving Lives with Adoptions, Rescue and Prevention

Finding forever homes for homeless pets

Dog leans on ownerAbandoned by the side of the road. Rescued from puppy mills. Orphaned by storms. No matter where they are, all homeless pets have one thing in common: they just want a family to call their own.

Every year, an estimated 7 million pets enter U.S. shelters. Nearly 3 million never find homes.

Jim and Janice Dougherty, the founders of PetSmart®, were all too familiar with these statistics. So, in 1994, the Doughertys created PetSmart Charities® as a nonprofit animal welfare organization that saves the lives of homeless pets.

Today, PetSmart Charities’ goal is to end pet homelessness for good. We’ve helped more than 6 million pets find forever homes. That’s 1 out of every 10 adoptions in North America.

Here’s how we do it:

  • Adoption centers. All 1,450+ PetSmart stores host Cat Adoption Centers and more than a dozen stores have Dog and Cat Everyday Adoption Centers, which free up space at shelters and help more pets find forever homes.
  • Adoption support. Every weekend, you’ll find pets from local shelters available for adoption at PetSmart Charities sponsored events like National Adoption Weekends, neighborhood weekend adoption events and community-wide adoption fairs. Plus, PetSmart Charities provides grant funding to help organizations increase their capacity to save pets' lives through adoption.
  • Emergency relief. PetSmart Charities Emergency Relief program has assisted more than 230,000 pets since 2007 by delivering much-needed supplies to animal rescue groups saving pets from man-made and natural disasters.
  • Prevention. PetSmart Charities provides grants that help spay/neuter clinics and animal welfare groups to perform more surgeries and educate communities.

What is success?

PetSmart Charities’ goal is to find a lifelong, loving home for every pet.

We find homes for more than 400,000 pets every year. With millions of pets still in need of homes, we continue to find new ways to reduce the homeless pet population.

There’s another important number to consider, but it’s impossible to add up. Every story from someone who has adopted through PetSmart Charities celebrates the love that pets bring to their families. That’s the real measure of success.

When you adopt, you save a pet’s life and enrich your own.
